First Holy Communion is, like Baptism and Confirmation, a sacrament of initiation. A sacrament through which God’s grace is imparted upon us, helping to guide and inform us in our commitment to living a Christian life and following Christ.
Preparation for First Holy Communion is three fold in that it takes place in the home, the parish and the school. Children’s preparation begins in 1st class and they then receive their First Holy Communion in 2nd class.
Prior to receiving First Holy Communion the children receive their First Penance or Confession also known as the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
First Holy Communion normally takes place each year in May. Both St Joseph’s and St Colmcille’s receive their Communion together on a Saturday morning in the Sacred Heart Church while Clonmore and Killea receive their First Holy Communion in the respective churches of St James’ and St Anne’s. Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 restrictions this year, this sacrament had to be delayed until September.
